Build Your Own Home Putting Green! Guide Part 1(b): Putting Green Materials (Infill).

Ok, you’ve made a decision on retaining wall blocks, pavers or some other border. Now, you will need some type of infill for the synthetic turf once you lay it down. We cover installing the artificial turf in Part 3.

I used a product called “Coal Slag.” Coal Slag is very fine sand and, as the name suggests, it is black in color. Actually, I had to search a little to find the coal slag as there are only a couple of companies in our area that have it available.

Tip: Call your local sandblasting supply company if the manufacturer of your putting green recommends this product. It isn’t very expensive…depending on how much you need.

The coal slag comes in 100 lb. bags and I needed a 30/60 grit or mesh size. Since my artificial putting green is one inch thick…I needed thirteen 100 lb. bags.

I followed my manufacturer’s instructions on how to decide how much I needed. I took the square footage of our putting green (240) and multiplied it by 5.5 (5.5 lbs. of infill per square ft.) to get 1,320 lbs…so I just ordered 13 bags (100 lbs. each).

Tip: Pay the extra charge to have the infill delivered…it is well worth it!

We’ll get more into what to do with the infill in Part 3.

Now, let's move to Build Your Own Home Putting Green! Guide Part 1(c): Putting Green Materials (Sub-Base).
