Kiawah Island Golf Resort
Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Kiawah Island Golf Resort Thoughtfully developed on a barrier island of coastal South
Carolina only 21 miles from historic Charleston, Kiawah
Island Golf Resort lies along 10 miles of one of America’s
top beaches, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.

This 10,000-acre island is a haven for a plethora of
wildlife including egrets, loggerhead turtles, and alligators.

RPGM talked with Mike Vegis, the resort’s public relations
director, about what makes Kiawah Island an ideal vacation
destination for golfers.

Tell us about your various golf courses.

The resort features five world-class golf courses designed by the
world’s leading golf course architects, including The Ocean
Course, site of the 1991 Ryder Cup Matches, the 2007 Senior
PGA Championship, and the 2012 PGA Championship.

In addition to this Pete Dye masterpiece, guests of the resort can
enjoy the Nicklaus-designed Turtle Point, site of the 1990 PGA
Cup and the 1987, 1992, 1996, and 2006 Carolina Amateur;
the Fazio-designed Osprey Point, site of the 2000 Eastern
Regional PGA Club Professional Championship; the
Player-designed Cougar Point, named the 2007
“Course of the Year” by the South Carolina Golf Course
Owner’s Association; and the Johnston-designed Oak
Point, rated 4.5 stars in the latest Golf Digest
“Best Places to Play” reader’s ratings.

Do you have a golf academy/school on site?

We are pleased to offer a full range of instructional programs that
include private lessons, group clinics and presentations, corporate
programs, and half-day and three-day golf schools.

The Tommy Cuthbert Golf Learning Center is named in honor of the man
who served as the resort's director of golf for 26 years. This
innovative facility features private instructional areas
(including seven covered hitting bays and Astroturf putting
surface for use in inclement weather), a state-of-the-art
computerized video swing analysis system, practice bunker and greens.

The indoor studio features the V1 video teaching system and the
new Explanar Teaching system.

Is there a place to stay on site? We have a Mobil Five Star/AAA Five Diamond oceanfront hotel and spa,
The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, as well as almost 600
villas and private homes available to rent. Prices vary by season.

Is your course open to the public? If so, what are your green fees
and cart fees? Do you give group discounts?

All five of our courses are open to the public. We do not charge cart
fees. Green fees vary by season and course. Guests of the resort
receive discounted green fees and preferred tee times.

What are the best times of the year to come stay at your resort to
play and stay?

Our peak golf seasons run from March 1 to June 1 and from
September 1 to December 1. That’s when the South Carolina
weather is the best for golf. In the summer, we’re more of a
beach destination that offers golf and tennis. Winters offer
the best rates, as the weather is sometimes iffy.
It can be 70 degrees, or it can be 40 degrees.
