Having an indoor putting green can be more than a dream...it can be a reality!
Hey, what golf nut doesn’t want to be able to practice putting on an indoor putting green while watching football or basketball…or anything on TV for that matter?
None that I know!
Don’t confuse an indoor putting green with a portable green. While both terms refer to greens for putting inside your home,
portable putting greens
are indeed what the name suggests…moveable.
For those who want the same experience inside as you would get on an outside synthetic turf putting green…the possibilities are incredible…like a kid in a candy store!
Some of the same manufacturers that make artificial turf for your backyard green also make synthetic turf that works beautifully inside your home.
I know what your thinking (or at least your spouse is thinking)…”How in the world can I put the same kind of turf I would use for a backyard green inside my home?”
I hear you, I hear you…but clear your mind of all that “I can’t” stuff and just look around your house visualizing the ultimate fun palace!
Here are some spots to get you started:
• Spare room (move the clutter out and the green in)
• Basement or unfinished basement
• Covered patio
• Family, game or entertainment room
• Garage
See? You DO have space for an indoor putting green!
“Ok, I see where I could put a green, but how would it all come together?”
Good question. Let’s take a look at what goes into installing an indoor putting green.
Since you know where it would go…go ahead and measure the space so you have the square footage.
Now, if we were talking about a backyard putting green, we would have multiple choices of turf to consider. But for inside, look for a well-made nylon turf.
There are different types of nylon synthetic turf (and different price ranges). You will pay more for nylon than some of the less expensive polypropylene turf that can be used for outdoor putting greens (nylon can be used outside too), but nylon will be a nice and smooth “roll” for your inside wonderland!
Maintenance? Don’t worry about that with the nylon turf you will be using inside…except you will have one more place to vacuum on your “chore” list.
Nylon turf should come with a nice 1/2 inch or so foam backing. If you’re going to use the unfinished basement, for example, for the green, then you can easily affix the foam backing to the concrete surface.
Your indoor putting green can be as small or as big as you like (or have room for). And you don’t have to stop with just a putting surface…add some nice touches like…
• Fringe
• Tee box area
• A bench by the tee box area
• Oh, and a 19th hole (because you get thirsty while you’re practicing!)
…and on and on…whatever you can dream up!
Know this…your friends will NOT want to leave…
Let’s see, have a Super Bowl party AND a putting tournament at the SAME time…does it get any better?
Nice.
